Mold Making and 3D Scanning

Companies that work with molds often make tooling changes right on the shop floor.  These kinds of work-in-process changes help to reduce production delays and keep products flowing out the door.  However, what usually happens is that these hand-finished changes result in a mismatch between the original CAD model and the actual physical mold.

When a mismatch like this occurs, it is necessary to determine where the CAD data differs from the actual part, and then modify the CAD data, and that’s where 3D laser scanning proves invaluable.  By scanning the actual part, and comparing the scanned data to the CAD model data, the model can be modified to reflect that changes.  This means that the current revision is always the one that is used on the shop floor.

Reverse Engineering and 3D Scanning

Another important application is reverse engineering and inspection of complex parts and assemblies.  Sometimes it is necessary to generate a new CAD / CAM model in order to update a manufacturer’s database of components that have changed since the original CAD models were developed.

This often occurs in the manufacturing of automobiles and aircraft.

By 3D scanning, a color error map can be generated to identify exactly how the current product differs from the original design intent. New products can then be developed from existing products by modifying the CAD model level rather than starting from scratch.

CAD modeling from laser scan data is typically about eight times faster than the time required for processes that involve manually creating the model from CMM touch probe data. The millions of coordinates from 3D laser scanning define all the subtle freeform and surface transitional shape changes that are difficult or impractical from a time standpoint to measure with a touch probe.
