Hewlett-Packard's newest large-format multifunction
device, the HP Designjet 820mfp, combines copying,
scanning and printing in black-and-white and color in an
integrated solution that will find a home in many small
firms. The Designjet 820mfp features a small footprint --
the scanner is stacked on top of the printer -- and a
15" LCD touchscreen mounted to the side for
controlling the devices via embedded Windows XP.
The HP Designjet 820mfp, which replaces the HP
Designjet 815mfp, offers several of the innovations found
in the heavy-duty HP Designjet 4500 printer series (which
we reviewed in April 2006; see "Cadalyst
Labs Review: Big Prints"); however, it is
designed for a lighter workload, making it ideal for small
architectural or design firms that need large-format
output but have limited floor space.
The controller for the 820mfp is based on a 2.6GHz
Pentium 4 processor and incorporates 1GB of memory. A
small keyboard is included with the system for data entry,
as is a DVD/CD reader and writer. The included software
includes integrated accounting features to track output
expenses and lets users print locally and through the
network.

HP's Designjet 820mfp is an integrated
all-in-one solution that can copy, scan and
print in color or black-and-white.

The scanner component of the Designjet 820mfp is based
on three cameras that provide an optical resolution of
508dpi or 2400dpi enhanced, with 0.15% line accuracy.
Users can scan originals up to 42" wide and 0.6"
thick in 24-bit color and 8-bit grayscale. Using
high-speed color scanning at 200dpi, the integrated
scanner scans at 1.5ips (inches per second) for color and
5ips in monochrome. Color 2D Adaptive Thresholding
provides color correction and 2D filters for color
sharpening, image softening and blur, while Dual 2D
Adaptive gray enhancement technology creates clean, crisp
scans -- even from poor quality originals. The scanner
comes with 1GB of memory, which is not expandable.
The thermal inkjet printer component of the HP
Designjet 820mfp can print lines with up to +/-0.2%
accuracy and can handle media rolls 42" wide by 150'.
The printer has an internal virtual computer that includes
an Adobe PostScript Level 3 RIP and an embedded HP-GL/2
processor with 160MB of RAM and a network interface. In
fast mode, the integrated printer can print up to 85
square feet per hour. It accommodates single-sheet feeds
along with roll feeds, and the printer includes a built-in
automatic paper cutter. Size of the ink drops are 18
picoliter (black) and 4 picoliter (color). The ink
cartridges have 69ml capacity each. The black ink is
pigment-based; the color inks are dye-based.
Connectivity options for the HP Designjet 820mfp are a
Centronics parallel IEEE 1284-compliant (ECP) port and a
Jetdirect 620n EIP internal print service for Fast
Ethernet 10/100 base-TX. An additional Fast Ethernet
10/100 Base-TX network interface is included for the
scanner.
Printer drivers are included for Microsoft Windows
95/98/Me/NT 4.0/2000 and Macintosh OS 8.1 or later, as
well as AutoCAD 2000/R13/R14. Microsoft Windows drivers
the scanner are included.
Pricing for the HP Designjet 820mfp is $20,995,
complete with one year of next-day onsite warranty
coverage. Other support options are available, such as
onsite assistance in setting up the device or extended
warranty coverage for up to five full years of coverage,
as well as post-warranty service options. Toll-free phone
support is available, as is e-support on a 24/7 basis. You
should also note that HP offers excellent Web-based
troubleshooting, customer forums, driver updates and
real-time firmware upgrades.
With its high-quality output, good speed, compact
footprint and relatively accessible price (it costs almost
$10,000 less than a Designjet 4500mfp), the HP Designjet
820mfp will make a welcome addition to many small- to
mid-sized design firms.
